Give an ordinary moment an unsuitable orchestra

Invent a terrible personal theme song by pairing an ordinary habit with a wildly unsuitable musical style, then making up a short title. Offer your own first, ask whether your date wants one and rank the results as imaginary elevator music. No singing, playback or musical knowledge is required.

This is a branch of our questions beyond the basics: it invites an opinion without requesting your entire life history. You do not need to quote a real song. Original, ridiculous titles are the point. Nobody has to clear the rights to “Gentle Panic at the Self-Checkout.”

The three-part composition method

1. Pick a minor personal event

Choose something about yourself: arriving eight minutes early, losing a pen while holding it, or opening the fridge with no operational plan. Avoid assigning the other person a flaw. They have come on a date, not authorised a documentary.

2. Give it a completely inappropriate genre

A grand orchestral fanfare for finding a parking meter. A whispered lullaby for sprinting to the bus. An urgent detective soundtrack for locating the other sock. The mismatch does the work; you do not need to produce the music.

3. Name the track

“I Have Arrived, Unfortunately.” “Three Emails Before Tea.” “The Bag Is Definitely Somewhere.” Explain in one sentence. A seven-minute account of your creative process is a different activity, and it needs an interval.

Make the duet opt-in

Ask, “Would you like an entrance theme, or shall we leave your public image intact?” If they opt in, base it on a habit or story they have offered and let them rewrite it. A theme about liking excellent stationery is safer than one about their body, accent or an insecurity they mentioned.

If they do not want a personal theme, compose one for an object: the café spoon, a dramatic lamp, the chair that squeaks. Objects are happy to be represented by “Unnecessary Triumph in B Minor.” People get a veto.

The elevator-music assessment

Rank each imaginary song on three questions: would this make a lift journey feel longer; would it make collecting a parcel seem suspicious; and would you rather take the stairs? No numerical system is necessary, although an entirely unfair tie is encouraged.

Keep the performance at conversational volume. Public speakers and surprise singing turn a private joke into everyone’s commute. When a title prompts a real story, follow the story. Our games that feel like conversation all have the same stopping rule: the person is more interesting than the game.
